Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria condemns, in strong terms, the crisis that erupted on Friday 12th February, 2021 in ShaSha Community of Akinyele Local Government Area in Ibadan, Oyo State.
Sadly, the crisis left in its wake loss of lives and destruction of properties in the community. The Conference frowns at a wanton destruction of property and needless loss of lives in our society. The Hausa people and their host Yoruba Community in Shasha Market must learn to explore peaceful means of resolving differences between them henceforth. This peaceful approach of resolving a misunderstanding will not only consolidate on the age-long harmonious co-existence of the two ethnic groups, but will also deter hoodlums from infiltrating their midst and inflicting terror on the innocent people.
We commend the swift intervention of the Executive Governor of Oyo State, Engr Seyi Makinde and the professionalism of the security agencies in dousing the tension generated by the crisis.
We equally call on the relevant authorities to prosecute the perpetrators of the crisis and, if convicted, punish them accordingly to serve as a deterrence to the others.
The much needed development in our country can only be achieved in an atmosphere of peace and harmony. We therefore call on the Nigerians to ensure peaceful co-existence with one another wherever they may find themselves in the country.
Signed
Rt Hon Abubakar Y. Suleiman, Fism, Mnim
